Babyhead and Fatty McNatty

I think I could write a book with all the things that happen in my life. I suppose writing a blog is the next best thing. This morning was actually a pretty easy morning, by comparison. Though Fatty McNatty did wake up to eat at 11:30, 1:30, 2:55, and then slept until 6:15.

...let me just interject here - coffee is a girls best friend. The hell with diamonds. OK, maybe not really the hell with them, I mean everyone loves jewelry, but even the nicest prettiest diamond will not keep you awake all day. Coffee might... BUT I digress....

Rob smoked a turkey last night. On a grill. Not in a peace pipe or anything. It looks amazing and I can't wait to eat it tonight. yummy. we are making stock with the carcass (we being him) and while the turkey was being cut up, we (again, him) got Babyhead #1 breakfast and we (being me) fed baby Fatty McNatty. I could hear Babyhead #1 asking all sorts of CRAZY questions that cracked me up. She asked about 30 times what he was doing. Here is a sample:

"Whats that"
"a turkey"
"OH"

"What are you doing?"
"I am cutting up the turkey"
"Is he dead?"
"Yes"
"We have 2 turkeys?"
(she knew that there was a turkey in the cooler with the brine - it is the same turkey, but she didn't quite get that)
"No we just have one"
"Is the one in the thingy (the cooler) dead too?"
"It's the same turkey. He isn't in the cooler. Daddy cooked it"
"Oh"

"Daddy?"
"Yes baby?"
"What's That"
"It's a Turkey baby" ....

I love my life...

Growing Growing Gone

So Madison is teething, which I don't really get because I didn't think she had any more teeth to get anytime soon, but I can feel it coming through her gum. And it would explain why she has been a "little more intense" *(nice mommy-speak for PAIN IN MY ASS) for the last few weeks. We go to the dentist soon for a general check up so I will be asking what the hell is going on. Did I give birth to a shark? because I even googled it and not that I am a dentist but I am pretty certain that she has all the teeth she is supposed to have right now...

BUT I am glad it is Madison teething, not Hana, because Hana is going through a growth spurt. Like she isn't big already, right? (this picture she is wearing a 12 month outfit. At 9 weeks...)

Hana is apparently going through her 3 month growth spurt because she is DEMANDING to be fed every 3 hours (and trust me, for a child that does NOT cry, it is clear as the bright blue sky when she actually NEEDS something). Every 3 hours. Morning - Noon - Night. At her daycare they are trying to hold her off to 9:30am in the morning (I feed her at 6:30am) and then she CHUGS her 6 oz bottle. I nurse her at lunch and they are feeding her another 6 oz in the afternoon. She is 11 weeks old. I think maybe the pediatrician was right when he said that maybe this one would take solids before 6 months... I just hope that by bragging about being a cow hasn't jinxed me. I guess it is good I have a freezer full of milk if it comes to that.
(And yes I know that it is a supply and demand thing and that if I don't let her nurse hungrily then I won't produce more, but I am just saying...)

Hands

So, Hana found her hands on Sunday. Now, for those of you who don't have kids, this might seem odd, or make you wonder if my baby girl will be taking the short bus to school. But finding her hands is a BIG deal. You see, babies will sometimes see things near their face, but most of the time they miss a lot. As they get older, they start to focus better and then all of a sudden one day the sense something moving and then BAM they hit themselves with their hands. This usually happens at the same time that they figure out they can SUCK on their hand (or whatever you put in it). But when they actually move their hands into their sight range and realize that those things are attached to them, it is pretty amazing to watch. Madison never really payed much attention to hers, but Hana... She will sit there and just examine them for HOURS. Seriously. She mouths them and then looks at them and does this little inhaling squeal (which is basically a laugh but she hasn't quite figured out how to laugh yet).

It's amazing to watch them go from a soft warm human looking lump to a little baby... and beyond. And the realization that you have to not only care for them but teach them everything is very humbling... And I love it.

Who let the cow out!

OK so here is a little rant about breastfeeding so if that bugs you just skip on past this post

I am a cow. There is not any other nice way to describe it. And I feel bad because there are so many people out there who can't produce any/enough milk. I am pumping while at work and going at lunch to feed Hana and I have a freezer full of milk. I gave up after her first month with feeding her when ever she thought she wanted to suck on something. I will say that I am a HUGE proponent of breastfeeding, but seriously, if you read "the womanly art of breastfeeding" and take all those words seriously you are going to be very tired.

My favorite part of the breastfeeding is when people tell me "oh you know if you breastfeed you can't get pregnant" I always laugh. Because if you read the "requirements" for that method it becomes pretty obvious why it seems to work. You have to nurse baby when baby is hungry (duh!) you have to nurse baby when baby wants comfort, you have to nurse baby if baby is seeming to want to suck on something. HORRIBLE mothers will give bottles and pacifiers. YOU MUST LET BABY NURSE to fulfill baby's need of sucking.

Are you seeing something here? If your child is nursing to fulfill all of this, then you likely have a baby on your boob for, like, 37 hours a day. So unless you are really that talented, and not grossed out by your child being part of your "adult time", you are likely NOT having any sex. Or a lot less of it. Thus, as we have learned, abstinence is the best method of birth control. So I don't think that breastfeeding actually prevent pregnancy in any sort of hormonal way, I think it just prevents sex, which prevents pregnancy.

Oh and my other favorite part of the breastfeeding "advice" ....
"you should allow your newborn to nurse to his full contentment. Allow him to remove himself from your breast, but encourage him to nurse at least 20 minutes on each breast, every hour..."

OK, I am not a math major, but that is what, 16 hours a DAY of nursing...

Um, yeah right. I'll stick to the pacifier. She is a fatty, so obviously she gets enough.

I guess the reason I am so annoyed by this is because the first time around I thought that that book was the next best thing to the bible. And I was so tired and sore and frustrated. I did nurse Babyhead #1 for a year, it all worked out, but at the beginning I felt like a fat looser cow that couldn't do what I was "suppose to". No wonder I was worried about my milk supply. NO ONE should be nursing that much. NO baby needs that much. And I felt guilty for NOT doing it, as I think a lot of women do. And a lot of women probably give up because of this bogus advice. There has to be a better way.

(That is NOT medical advice, so please do not take it as such :) )

OK. Stepping off the soap box now...

Mommy & me

One more picture from the 25th of July. Me and Hana...
With her belly hanging out. And with me without a hair cut in recent weeks...

Sisters

Here is a picture of the two of them after the party. Hana is wearing an outfit that is 12 month size. at 2 months... :) Madison LOVES her sister. And Hana loves Madison, but may have been a little tired at this point. She is pretty mad!

The funniest thing is that I NEVER thought I would be that mom that dresses her kids alike. And now I am...

I AM TRYING TO KEEP UP!

OK, so I need to get some more pictures off my computer, but here are some from recently. The "BIG" present that we got Madison for her birthday was a JEEP. yes, a big green JEEP. I ALWAYS wanted one of these. And you know what? She hasn't been back on it since the day we gave it to her. I don't think she likes it...

And for those of you who have read the "big" go dogs go will recognize this hat from the end of the book. My sister made it for Madison as that book is her favorite! "and now do you like my hat?" "I do! I like that party hat!" Thanks aunt Karin!!
